The soldier who killed 3 Pakistanis with bare hands during Kargil war

Synopsis

Join Flags of Honour in honouring Subedar Sanjay Kumar on his birthday today. His act of bravery was instrumental in recapturing the Flat Top area from the hands of Pakistani intruders during the Kargil war.

Subedar Sanjay Kumar was just 23 years old when war broke out in the Kargil sector between India and Pakistan.

Then a rifleman, Sanjay Kumar posted with the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles.

The brave soldier volunteered to be the leading scout of the attacking column that was tasked with capturing area Flat Top of Point 4875 in the Mushkoh Valley on July 4, 1999.

As the attack progressed, enemy automatic fire from one of the Sangars posed stiff opposition, thereby stalling the column. Subedar Sanjay Kumar didn't flinch -- he charged the enemy Sangar without caring for personal safety.

In the ensuing hand to hand combat, he killed three Pakistani intruders. Despite being seriously injured himself, he charged on to the second Sangar, taking the enemy by total surprise.

The intruders deserted the post leaving behind a universal machine gun. Subedar Sanjay Kumar picked up the weapon and neutralised the fleeing enemy.

Although he had lost a lot of blood, Subedar Sanjay Kumar refused to be evacuated.

His bravery charged up his comrades who went on to wrest the Flat Top area from the hands of Pakistani intruders.

Subedar Sanjay Kumar was awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his bravery.
