Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Narendra Singh Tomar held a meeting with the PM at the Prime Minister’s residence at 10 am as farmers continued to protest for the 10th straight day, demanding the government must repeal the farm laws. The fifth round of talks with farmer’s leaders is scheduled at 2 pm later today.

On his way to the PM’s residence, Tomar expressed hope that the farmers would think positively over the Bills and end their agitation in New Delhi and the neighbouring states. The fourth round of talks between the Centre and the farmer's unions was held on December 3, which concluded without any significant progress.

During the fourth round of talks which took place on Thursday, the government agreed to make some amendments to the farm laws. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar also said that the government had no ego and was willing to give assurance on minimum support price (MSP), one of the most important concerns raised by the farmers.

The protesting farmers, who have already blocked many key routes leading to Delhi from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, on Friday threatened to intensify their agitation and block more roads if the government did not accept their demand.

Looking to mount pressure on the Centre ahead of the fifth round of talks on Saturday, farmers’ unions opposed to the new agri laws have called for a Bharat bandh on December 8.

The government, however, maintains that the new laws will provide farmers with better opportunities. It has also accused the opposition parties of "misleading" the farmers.
