FIFA has just dropped its new power rankings for the World Cup, and it's shaking things up! Based on how players have been performing in the group stages, Argentina's captain Lionel Messi is holding on to the number one spot.

For the first time ever, FIFA has released a power ranking for players during a World Cup. This list is based on how everyone played in the group stage and the first knockout matches.

What is considered

FIFA's new system uses real-time data from the ground. It gives players a score from 0 to 10 across three areas: attack, creativity, and defence, to decide their final power ranking.

Messi Number One

Argentina's captain Lionel Messi is sitting at the top of the FIFA power rankings. He took back the number one spot from Germany's Deniz Undav after scoring a brilliant free-kick against Jordan. Messi is also the World Cup's top scorer with six goals.

Mbappe also rises

Kylian Mbappe has moved up from third to second place. Even though he didn't score in the last group match against Norway, his overall performance pushed him up the list. Mbappe is currently the second-highest scorer with four goals.

Undav as a surprise

VfB Stuttgart's German striker Deniz Undav is the surprise package at number three. He came on as a substitute for Germany and created magic in this World Cup. Even though Germany is out, Undav's three goals and two assists have kept him high up in the rankings.

Vinicius loses his spot

Brazil's superstar Vinicius Junior has dropped two spots to sixth place. He played well against Japan but couldn't find the back of the net. Vini Jr. is fourth on the top scorers' list with four goals in the tournament.

Dembele climbs up

France's Ousmane Dembele has shot up to fifth place in the FIFA power rankings. His amazing hat-trick performance against Norway is the reason for this massive jump.

Haaland is seventh

Norway's star striker Erling Haaland has kept his seventh position in the power rankings. He didn't even play in the final group match against France, but his performance was strong enough to hold his spot. Haaland is fifth on the top scorers' list with four goals.

Ronaldo's position

Portugal's captain Cristiano Ronaldo has slipped way down the power rankings. After a poor first game, he did score twice in the second match. But a quiet game against Colombia saw his rank fall to 79th.

Orlando Gill among goalkeepers

Paraguay's goalkeeper Orlando Gill has the highest rank among all keepers. He put up a heroic performance against Germany in the knockout match, earning him the top spot with a score of 8.1 points.
