The TMC on Monday (January 11) lashed out at the BJP, accusing it of trying to evoke Bengal's icons, such as Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, for political gains.

TMC leader Bratya Basu claimed that the BJP talking about Vivekananda was ironic since it “does not believe in his teachings. The BJP’s vision does not match with Vivekananda’s ideals”.

The remarks came after the BJP organised a foot march in Kolkata to mark the religious leader’s birth anniversary.

Bratya Basu said, “The BJP is spreading misinformation about our luminaries. Have they ever spoken accurately about Chaitanya, Rabindranath, Ishwar Chandra (Vidyasagar) or any of our intellectual forefathers?”

“The BJP is using Ramakrishna and Vivekananda’s name to win the hears of people in Bengal. They are making baseless strategies to win the Bengal polls, “he added.

The minister claimed CM Mamata Banerjee had revived the legacy of Bengal’s luminaries at a time when everyone was on the verge of forgetting them.
