NEET, JEE 2020: Students want exams to be held, says Education minister

Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on Thursday (August 27) said that with the number of admit cards being downloaded in the past few days, students want exams to be held at any cost.

He said that 7.5 lakhs out of 8.58 lakhs candidates in JEE have downloaded admit cards. For NEET, over 10 lakhs out of 15.97 lakhs candidates downloaded admit cards in 24 hours.

He added that this shows that students want exams held at any cost.

A total of 15.97 lakh candidates have registered for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG).

The National Testing Agency (NTA) issued a press release on Tuesday (August 25) stating that NEET(UG) and JEE(Main) exams will be held on the dates as announced before.

NEET 2020 is scheduled for September 13 while the JEE Mains is to be held between September 1 and September 6.

Earlier, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the exams amid COVID-19 by stating, "We find that there is absolutely no justification in the prayer made for postponement of the examination in question relating to NEET-UG 2020 as well as JEE (Main)".

Meanwhile, over 150 academicians from various universities in India and abroad have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in support of conducting the exam.
