Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, has grown taller by 0.86 metre.

A joint study conducted by Nepal and Chain has concluded that the height of Mount Everest is 8,848.86 metres. The 1954 estimate of Everest's height Indian survey was at 8848m. The new estimate by Nepal and China increased it by 0.86 metre. The announcement -- made jointly by Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi -- puts to an end historical speculations with regard to the Everest's heaight.
According to Nepal's Department of Survey, the measurement is within centimeters of accuracy and was calculated using a range of methods including traditional ones and those based on the latest technology.A contested claimIn 2005, a Chinese survey measured Everest's height from both the rock base and the top of the snowfall gave a figure of 8,844.43 metres (29,017.2ft).

But Nepal, foe which the Everest is a national symbol, insisted that the snow cap should be included -- giving a figure of 8,848 metres (or 29,028 feet), in line with the findings of a 1954 Indian survey. The dispute arose again when in 2015, geologists suggested that the snowcap may have shrunk by a few centimetres after a magnitude 8.1 earthquake hit Nepal.
