Basavarj Bommai joins a new league of CMs: Ex-chief ministers' children who went on to sit on CM's chair

New Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai joins the league of sons and daughters taking over the post once held by their fathers.

Basavaraj Bommai, who replaces BS Yediyurappa as the chief minister of Karnataka, is the son of the late SR Bommai. SR Bommai was the eleventh chief minister of Karnataka. Basavaraj joins the league of sons and daughters taking over the post once held by their fathers.

Tamil Nadu
MK Stalin is currently the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Stalin has been elected to the post in the 2021 assembly elections. Stalin is the son of the late Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam supremo M Karunanidhi. Karunanidhi was the chief minister of the state five times. 

Andhra Pradesh
Jagan Mohan Reddy was sworn in as Andhra Pradesh chief minister on May 30, 2019. Jagan is the son of the late BS Rajasekhar Reddy, one of the most successful chief ministers of the state. Rajasekhar Reddy served as a chief minister twice in 2004 and 2009.

Odisha
Biju Janata Dal's Naveen Patnaik is the chief minister of Odisha. He is currently in his fifth term on the post. His father, Biju Patnaik, served twice as the chief minister of the state.

Jharkhand
Hemant Soren is currently in his second term as chief minister of Jharkhand. The second term began in 2019. Hemant's father and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief Shibu Soren was chief minister twice.

Karnataka
HD Kumaraswamy was the 18th chief minister of Karnataka from May 23, 2018, to July 23, 2019. Kumaraswamy is former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda's son. The Janata Dal-Secular supremo was also chief minister of the state from December 11, 1994, to May 31, 1996.

Uttar Pradesh
Akhilesh Yadav was Uttar Pradesh chief minister in 2012. His father and Samajwadi Party patron Mulayam Singh served for three non-consecutive terms as chief minister.

Jammu and Kashmir
Omar Abdullah was the youngest J&K chief minister when he formed a coalition government with the Congress party in 2009. His father and National Conference patron Farooq Abdullah was chief minister of the former state between 1982 to 2002.

Jammu and Kashmir
People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti as the last chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir as a state. Her tenure continued from April 4, 2016, till June 19, 2018. Her late father, Mufti Mohammad Saeed, served twice as the J&K chief minister -- from November 2002 to November 2005 and from March 2015 to January 2016.
