However, the state has the second highest number of active cases in absolute terms, after only Maharashtra, which has nearly 3 lakh more total cases than Karnataka.

Moreover, Karnataka, with 60% of all patients under treatment, beats even Maharashtra, where only 36% of the cases are active. Nationally, 33% of all cases are active.

Karnataka is battling a problem of a dip in the pace of recoveries, which experts say is due to an increase in the number of acute cases.

According to a report on popular website, Dr Giridhar Babu, member, ICMR task force on research and surveillance, and Karnataka COVID task force, explains, “Earlier, most cases in Karnataka were just infections where patients’ conditions remained well under control, while now there are more cases where the infection has progressed to the disease stage, which, naturally, take longer to recover.”

Karnataka had 1.1 lakh COVID-19 cases of which 67,447 or 60% were still under treatment. Comparatively, Maharashtra had 4 lakh cases of which 36% (1.4 lakh) are active cases.
