Recently, media reports suggested that Kohli would step down as Team India skipper post ICC World T20 2021. However, BCCI has clarified that he would continue to lead across formats even after the tournament.
Virat Kohli will have a grave task at hand as he leads Team India in the 2021 ICC World T20 in the United Arab Emirates from next month. However, a few reports are circulating, claiming that Kohli could step down from the role after the tournament, making way for Rohit Sharma.
Meanwhile, Arun Dhumal, treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has clarified that the reports are rubbish. At the same time, he has confirmed that Kohli would continue to lead the side across formats even after the WT20, reports IANS.
Filtering on the reports of split captaincy (Kohli for Tests and Rohit for limited-overs), Dhumal stated that these are just baseless reports created by the media houses. He affirmed that no such discussions had taken place in the BCCI.
It is to be noted that Rohit has a rich history of being successful as the skipper in limited-overs. Having helped the side win the Asia Cup and a few more tournaments, he is the most successful skipper in the Indian Premier League, helping Mumbai Indians win the title on record five instances.
A few reports had also stated that some top officials in the BCCI were unhappy with Kohli's leadership qualities, especially when it comes to team selection. The issue supposedly arose following India's loss to New Zealand in the ICC World Test Championship final a couple of months back.
Despite the overcast and seam-friendly conditions, Kohli had gone ahead with a couple of spinners, which did not impress BCCI. Also, the appointment of former skipper MS Dhoni as a team mentor for WT20 fuelled the speculations.
