IPL 2020, Match 22: Records shattered aplenty as SRH outplay KXIP

This was Sunrisers Hyderabad's third win of the season in six matches, as they rise to the third spot of the table. Meanwhile, KXIP's poor run in the Indian Premier League this season continues, as they suffered their fifth loss in six matches, lurking at the bottom of the table.

Former champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) came up with a dominating display, as they outplayed Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in Match 22 of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL), on Thursday. Being played in Dubai, SRH won the match by 69 runs, as they rise to the third spot in the table.

Match report: Winning the toss, SRH skipper David Warner elected to bat first, as the decision went in their favour. Openers Warner (52) and Jonny Bairstow (97) put up a massive 160-run opening stand, as they cruised to a challenging total of 2016.

In reply, the KXIP batsmen were naturally under pressure and they succumbed, as they lost their opening three wickets within the first seven overs. Besides Nicholas Pooran's 77, none of the other batsmen could even go past 11 runs, as Rashid Khan's 312 derailed KXIP's quest. Consequently, records were scripted in abundance.

Warner scripts numerous with a half-century: Warner had scored just a half-century in the tournament so far. However, his purple patch against KXIP continued, as he scored his second 50 this season, while it also turned out to be his ninth consecutive half-century against the side. His highest score in these innings has been 81 on two occasions. This also happens to be the record of scoring the most 50 against an opponent in the tournament's history. He also became the first IPL player to score 50 half-centuries.

Warner and Bairstow nail it: Warner and Bairstow scripted a special record, as they scored a 1,000-run stand in the tournament's history. Overall, they are the seventh pair to do so. They are also the fifth pair to score the most 100-plus stands in the tournament, having done so on five occasions, along with Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The list for the same is led by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who have done it on nine instances. While this was SRH's 23rd 100-plus stand in the IPL, the pair has been involved on 18 occasions. The pair also became the second to score most 100-plus IPL stands, while Warner and Shikhar Dhawan lead the list with six.

SRH score their highest powerplay total: Despite a tough season, SRH have managed to score their highest total in the powerplay this season, of 580. Their previous best in this phase was 561, against Mumbai Indians (MI).

Bairstow scores fourth-highest individual score: Bairstow's resplendent innings of 97 was the fourth-highest score by a batsman for the side. The record for the same lies with Warner, who had scored 126 against KKR in 2017, followed by Bairstow (114) and Warner (100*).

SRH record an unwanted one: While SRH did post a respectable total of 2016, they also scripted an unwanted one in the process. Their flurry of wicket loss in the closing stages of the innings has handed them the lowest scoring rate between overs 16-20 this season. While SRH have a rate of 8.76, MI lead on top, with 13.03.

Pooran's half-century among the fastest: KXIP too spiced things up as Pooran played a fightable knock of 37-ball 77. He became the second-fastest to score a half-century for the side, in 17 deliveries. The record for the same is held by KL Rahul (14).
