India are off to a rocky start in defence of their Border-Gavaskar Trophy, won by them during their last tour of Australia, in 2018-19. India played their first-ever day-night Test in Australia and ended up on a losing note, within two and a half days.

Hosts Australia showed no remorse to the Indians, as they tore them apart in all departments, especially in the second innings, winning the opening day-night Test by eight wickets on Day 3, at the Adelaide Oval, on Saturday. India are the defending champions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, having won it during their last visit in 2018-19. Meanwhile, numerous records were scripted during the day, mostly unwanted ones for India, as we take a quick look at it all.

Second instance of 1st innings team trailing, winning the Test: Undoubtedly, Australia came up with one of the performances of their life, as they outplayed India on Day 3 to script the win, despite trialling in the first innings. Consequently, they became only the second team in the history of day-night Tests to win doing the same, with the first being Sri Lanka, who beat the Windies in 2018.

Virat Kohli and co. script an unwanted first one: In a first, yet unwanted record, this was the first instance of Virat Kohli and his team losing a Test despite winning the toss. It has happened for the first time in the 26 Tests they have played under him, so far.

Mayank Agarwal scripts a fastest feat on an odd day: Mayank was dismissed for mere nine today. However, he brought up his 1,000th run in the process, as he became the third-fastest (19 innings) to do so. He is led by Cheteshwar Pujara (18) and Vinod Kambli (14).

Kohli finishes 2020 with a drought: Blame it on the pandemic or his shaky form, but the world's best batsman has ended 2020 without a century across formats. It is only the second time in the Indian skipper's career that he has done so, with the first being in 2008. Kohli would not be playing the second Test, from December 26, as he is flying back to India, ahead of the birth of his first child.

Lowest Test total for India: The first and obvious record, it happened to be India's lowest total in the format, as they were rattled up for 36. They went past their previous lowest of 42, that came against England at Lord's in 1974. However, India were not exactly bundled out today, with the final batsman, Mohammed Shami retiring hurt. It was also the lowest total in the current century by any team. Overall, it was the seventh-lowest total in Test history. Furthermore, it was also the lowest by any team in a day-night Test.

Second instance of no batsman reaching doubles in an innings: In another hated record, this was only the second instance in Test history of no batsman entering double figures in an innings. The first and only case before this was in 1924, when South Africa were bundled out for 30 against England, with Herbie Taylor (7) being the top scorer. For India today, it was Mayank Agarwal (9).

Match summary: Electing to bat first, the Indians scored a total of 244, courtesy Kohli's 74. As for Australia, they were bowled out for just 191, thanks to Ashwin's 455. However, the second innings saw Indians collapsing at a paltry score for 36, on Day 3, with Josh Hazlewood (58) and Pat Cummins (421) wreaking havoc. In the end, it was a comfortable eight-wicket chase for the hosts, with Joe Burns staying unbeaten on 51.Brief scores: India 244 & 369 (Myanak 9; Hazlewood 58, Cummins 421) lost to Australia 191 and 150 (Burns 51*; Ashwin 116) by eight wickets.
