Veteran filmmaker Panchu Arunachalam passes away at 75

Synopsis

Panchu Arunachalam, who has been credited with bringing superstar Rajinikanth to the masses, passed away at his residence due to old age.

Arunachalam had scripted over 100 Tamil films, including hits like Murattu Kaalai, Sakalakala Vallavan and Apoorva Sagodharargal

Although the late Kollywood filmmaker K Balachander might have launched Rajinikanth, Panchu was responsible for making the 65-year-old actor a superstar.

Rajini and Arunachalam have worked together in 23 films, including Kazhugu, Pokkiri Raja and Paayum Puli among others.

He also came to be known for his relationship with actor Kamal Hassan, and the duo worked together in 13 films. The producer was also responsible for launching the career of Tamil music maestro Ilaiyaraaja.

Earlier this year, a documentary on Panchu called 'A Creator With Midas Touch' was released.

Arunachalam is survived by son Subbu Panchu Arunachalam, a successful Tamil actor.
