Indian woman cricketer Harleen Deol has been in the headlines since Friday night. The 23-year-old batter pulled off a stunning effort. However, the action was not from the bat or ball but in the field.
During the English innings, Amy Ellen Jones was playing a beautiful knock. While batting at 43, she played a shot off pacer Shikha Pandey in the 19th over. As the shot was lofted towards long-off, Deol was stationed at the boundary.
Since she was close to the ropes, she lofted the ball in the air after taking the catch. As she went outside the boundary, she popped back in, right on time while claiming the catch in the air, eventually dismissing Jones.
Her effort was applauded by all, including former Indian legend VVS Laxman. "As good a catch one will ever see on a cricket field, from Harleen Deol. Absolutely top class," he wrote on Twitter.
Nonetheless, Deol's effort went in vain as India ultimately lost the game by 18 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method in a rain-marred clash. Meanwhile, with a couple of more games to go, India has a chance to bounce back.
Match summary
Winning the toss, India invited England to bat during the first T20I at the County Ground in Northampton. However, the decision seemingly backfired as the host batted steadily and managed to post an above-par total of 177/7, thanks to Natalie Sciver's 55. In reply, India could manage 54/3, but fell short by 18 after rain cut the game short.
Brief scores: England 177/7 (Sciver- 55, Jones- 43; Pandey- 3/22) beat India 54/3 (Mandhana- 29; Glenn- 1/6) by 18 runs (D/L method).
