Rahul Dravid appointed as Team India head coach - Details here

Rahul Dravid has been confirmed as the new Indian head coach by the BCCI, replacing Ravi Shastri. He would be in charge of the side starting the home series against New Zealand later this month.


Team India has got a new head coach, as Rahul Dravid has been roped in for the role by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He would be replacing Ravi Shastri and would be taking charge of the team after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, during the home series against New Zealand this month.

The BCCI announced on Wednesday evening while India was playing against Afghanistan in the T20WC in Abu Dhabi. BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) took the decision via Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh. While Shastri’s term comes to an end after the ongoing global competition, he had decided against an extension.

BCCI also went on to congratulate Shastri, along with Bharat Arun (Bowling coach), R Sridhar (Fielding coach) and Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach), on their successful stint so far. It acknowledged their contribution in helping India reach the final of the ICC World Test Championship, besides also helping India win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under earlier this year.

Speaking on his appointment, Dravid stated in a BCCI release, “It is an absolute honour to be appointed as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team, and I am really looking forward to this role. Under Mr Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward. Having worked closely with most of the boys either at NCA, U19 and India A setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day. There are some marquee multi-team events in the next two years, and I look forward to working with the players and the support staff to achieve our potential.”

Dravid was also welcomed by his former Indian teammate and now BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, who affirmed, “The BCCI welcomes Rahul Dravid as the Head Coach of India’s senior men team. Rahul has had an illustrious playing career and is one of the greats of the game. He has also served Indian cricket as Head of National Cricket Academy (NCA) with distinction. Rahul’s effort at the NCA has nurtured several young cricketing talents who have gone on to represent the country at the international stage. I am hopeful that his new stint will take Indian cricket to new heights.”
