Pataudi Trophy 2021: KL Rahul fined by ICC for showing dissent towards umpire's decision during 4th Test

Synopsis

KL Rahul managed to play an average innings of 46 on Day 3 of the fourth Test against England. However, he was not happy with the umpire's decision, leading to him being fined by the ICC.

Indian opener played an ordinary innings of 46 on Day 3 of the fourth Test against England at the Oval in London on Saturday. Seamer James Anderson dismissed him after he edged the ball behind to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Although he was initially given not out by the on-field umpire, England reviewed it, following which the decision was overturned. Rahul shook his head in disbelief on his way back, unhappy with the third umpire's decision.

The act of Rahul was enough to draw the attention of the International Cricket Council, as on Sunday, he was fined 15% of his match fees. Additionally, he was handed a demerit point, which was his first in a period of 24 months.

The sanction was put ahead by match referee Chris Broad, while Rahul admitted to the offence. As a result, there was no need for an official hearing.

Also, umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, along with Michael Gough (TV umpire) and Mike Burns (fourth umpire), levelled the charges. Since it was a Level 1 breach, it carries an official reprimand to 50% of the match fees fine, along with a or couple of demerit points.

Match summary
India was invited to bat first, and it managed 191, while England came up with a solid reply to finish 290. Meanwhile, India has shown tremendous resilience to fight back with the bat since Day 2, as England is under pressure, with the lead extending to 230 by lunch on Day 4.
Brief scores: India 191 & 329/6 (Rohit- 127, Pujara- 61; Woakes 2/47) leads England 290 (Pope- 81, Woakes- 50; Yadav- 3/76) by 230 runs.
