T20 World Cup 2021: Australia secures a dominating 8-wicket win as Bangladesh ends Super 12 winless

On Thursday, Australia annihilated Bangladesh by eight wickets in the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. With this, Australia stays in semis contention, while Bangladesh ends its campaign winless.


Australia continued with its winning momentum and stayed in contention for the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup semis. On Thursday, it defeated Bangladesh by a convincing margin of eight wickets in the Group 1 Super 12 clash at the Dubai International Stadium. With this loss, Bangladesh has ended its campaign winless.

Winning the toss, Australian skipper Aaron Finch opted to field, making a change by bringing in Mitchell Marsh for Aston Agar. In contrast, Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah, too, made a change by replacing Nusum Ahmed with Mustafizur Rahman. Bangladesh lost four wickets by the sixth over of the Powerplay itself, including both openers, at 32 runs.

A run later, in the seventh, Afif Hossain (0) departed to spinner Adam Zampa. Mahmudullah (16) and Shamim Hossain (19) posted a 29-run partnership for the sixth wicket with half of the side down. The latter was dismissed by Zampa in the 11th, followed by Mahedi Hasan (0) in the same over.

At 65, seamer Mitchell Starc got rid of Mahmudullah in the 13th. The remaining batters were dismissed for single figures, as Bangladesh was shot out for 73 by the 15th. Of the five Aussie bowlers, Zampa claimed five, while spinner Glenn Maxwell did well with his economy. In reply, the Australian openers were off to a flier.

Openers David Warner (18) and Finch (40) contributed to a 58-run opening stand by the fifth over before the latter was knocked over by pacer Taskin Ahmed. Nine runs later, the former departed to pacer Shoriful Islam in the sixth. Nevertheless, Marsh (16*), along with Maxwell (0*), got the job done by the seventh over itself.

It was Australia's biggest win in terms of balls to spare (82) in the competition, while overall, it was the second most after Sri Lanka (90). The Bangladeshis used just three bowlers, with Taskin and Shoriful claiming wickets, while the latter was the most economical from his side.
