Coronavirus: Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma donate money to Mumbai Police

Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have contributed money for the welfare of Mumbai Police as they fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) from the frontline

Mumbai: Param Bir Singh, the Mumbai Police commissioner, on Saturday (May 9), thanked Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and his Bollywood actress wife Anushka Sharma for contributing money towards the Mumbai Police Foundation.

The money donated by Kohli and Anushka will help Mumbai Police personnel who are in the frontline to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Param Bir said.

Kohli and Anushka have donated Rs 5 lakh each, according to Mumbai Police commissioner. He announced this on the micro-blogging website Twitter.

“Thank you, @imVkohli and @AnushkaSharma for contributing Rs. 5 lacs each towards the welfare of Mumbai Police personnel. Your contribution will safeguard those at the frontline in the fight against Coronavirus. #MumbaiPoliceFoundation (sic),” Param Bir tweeted.

Currently, India is under a lockdown until May 17 to contain the spread of the virus. Kohli and Anushka have been active on social media sharing messages and videos urging citizens to stay at home and be safe during the health crisis.

Earlier, both Kohli and Anushka had donated an undisclosed sum to Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM CARES Fund) and to Maharashtra chief minister’s relief fund.

In March, Anushka had written on her Instagram account, “Virat and I are pledging our support towards PM-CARES Relief Fund and Chief Minister's Relief Fund (Maharashtra). Our hearts are breaking looking at the suffering of so many and we hope our contribution, in some way, helps easing the pain of our fellow citizens (sic).”

Kohli had also appreciated the police personnel across the nation and acknowledged Delhi Police’s efforts. “It is heartening for me to know that the police service across the nation is helping so many people in these difficult times. I want to acknowledge the efforts of Delhi police who have not only performed their duties with absolute honesty but also taken food to the poor people on a daily basis, which is their utmost requirement. So, well done and keep putting in the same effort,” the skipper had said.
