Serum Institute of India has slashed the price of its Covid-19 vaccine Covishield by Rs 100 as a 'philanthropic gesture'.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Adar Poonawalla said: "As a philanthropic gesture on behalf of Serum Institute of India, I hereby reduce the price to the states from Rs 400 to Rs 300 per dose, effective immediately."

The decision, Poonawalla said, will save thousands of crores of state funds. 

"This will enable more vaccinations and save countless lives," he said.

The SII decision comes two days after the Centre wrote to the company and to Bharat Biotech requested them to revise the rates.

This after many state governments reached out to the Centre, asking it to ensure uniformity in the prices levied. At present, the Centre is procuring the vaccines at Rs 150 per dose.
