As every year new words gain entry into the Oxford English Dictionary for the benefit of the readers, this year among few words, Remdesivir also was added for its extensive usage in general conversation following the Covid second wave.
After 'unmute' gained entry into Oxford English Dictionary in 2020 after India along with several other countries went into lockdown and the companies resorted to 'work from home policy', in 2021, it's Remdesivir that made it into Oxford English Dictionary.
Among the 700 new words that entered into Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in June 2021, the widely used word Remdesivir during Covid second wave also found its way into the list of new words in the dictionary.
As per reports, the Oxford English Dictionary through a release had contended that due to pandemic, the impact of the use of language is being noticed, this apart, senses and additions were added to some already existing words during the current pandemic stage.
Citing an example of social distance used in 2004, the OED said the usage in 2020 was different altogether.
The word was also referred to discrimination against a particular community or a group based on their faith and caste. However, now it means to keep a distance between a person to avoid any kind of virus transmission.
In 1983, stay-at-home was a policy during an outbreak of water-borne infection Cholera, but today it is an order.
Last year the word 'unmute' was added due to video conferencing and work-from-home, and as this word was widely used.
Apart from 'unmute' words like Zoom, C-19 and others were also added to Oxford English Dictionary list last year.
