In the absence of its mother's warmth, a newborn patas monkey in a Mexican zoo has found something else to cling to: a soft teddy bear that seldom leaves its side. According to media reports, the young monkey was taken from its mother immediately after birth when zoo officials detected indications of mistreatment. Caretakers saw that the inexperienced mother was unable to adequately nurse and safeguard the infant, which is not unusual for first-time primates.
The zoo workers acted quickly when the newborn's life was in danger. The small patas monkey is now constantly supervised, hand-fed and thoroughly watched to ensure proper development. Aside from physical care, the keepers had to address something less visible: the emotional desire for comfort and security. To fill that void, they introduced a soft teddy bear.
“They cling, and at that age all the security they have comes from their mother. So, in the absence of his mother, what we do is substitute her with a stuffed toy that, as you can see, is furry so that he can hold on to it. This is completely natural behaviour for him. He needs to feel sheltered and safe in order to move around and even feed himself. If you noticed, he clings completely to his stuffed toy. This toy will gradually be removed so that when he reaches an appropriate age, he can let go of it completely and integrate with other patas monkeys,” said Ivan Reynoso, a zoo staff.
Zoo officials said such objects are often used in animal care to support young animals that are hand-reared, particularly primates that rely heavily on physical bonding in early life.
The poignant images of the infant monkey hugging its teddy have reminded people online of Punch from Japan, another young primate who found solace in a toy buddy, a little but powerful reminder of how, even in the animal world, the desire for affection is strong.
The internet heaped all praise to zookeepers for caring for the baby monkey. “That baby monkey deserves all the comfort it can get, hope it snuggles that bear a lot,” he said.
“The zoo stepped in with love. Pure innocence and cuteness in the middle of a tough world. Nature never fails to remind us how fragile and beautiful life is. Adorable!” another comment read. Another seemed to ask Grok, asking “@grok what's the name of this monkey?”
