A 6.0 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday shook Melbourne, sending terrified citizens onto the streets. The earthquake occurred and was felt for hundreds of kilometres. Cracks have been discovered in the walls of buildings in Melbourne's Chapel Street area.  At the same time, individuals in northern areas of the city reported losing power and being evacuated from buildings. The tremor was felt as far away as Adelaide, 800 kilometres to the west in the state of South Australia, and Sydney, 900 kilometres to the north in the state of New South Wales; however, there were no reports of damage or casualties outside of Melbourne.

The tremor on Wednesday was stronger than the country's deadliest tremor, a 5.6 in Newcastle in 1989 that killed 13 people.
