7.0 quake rocks Greek island, buildings collapse in Turkish city

Synopsis

 A strong earthquake was reported just off coast of west Turkey on the Greek island of Samos in the eastern Aegean Sea at 5:21 pm IST.   

A strong earthquake was reported just off coast of west Turkey on the Greek island of Samos in the eastern Aegean Sea at 5:21 pm IST. 

Deputy Mayor of Eastern Samos told media persons that a number of buildings had collapsed in the area.

Social media users shared visuals of how the tremor had leveled buildings in the Turkish city of Izmir.

The US Geological Survey said the tremor was felt as far away as Athens and Istanbul. 

The US Geological Survey and the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, have given the earthquake a magnitude of 7 Richter.
