US President Donald Trump has pardoned Michael Flynn, whose case the Justice Department had sought to dismiss after he twice pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of investigation.
The pardon spares General Flynn the possibility of any prison sentence. General Flynn had pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI about interactions he had with Russia's ambassador to the United States in the weeks leading up to Trump's inauguration in January 2017.
Trump took to Twitter to post, "It is my Great Honor to announce that General Michael T Flynn has been granted a Full Pardon. Congratulations to @GenFlynn and his wonderful family, I know you will now have a truly fantastic Thanksgiving!"
General Flynn, the former national security adviser, was the only White House official to be convicted as part of the Trump-Russia investigation that was completed by the special counsel, Robert Mueller. Trump fired General Flynn in early 2017 after only 24 days as NSA after controversy erupted over the latter's contacts with then Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak.
Flynn is the second Trump associate convicted in the Russia probe to be granted clemency by the president. Trump commuted the sentence of longtime confidant Roger Stone just days before he was to report to prison.
