Highlights
  • Snapchat CEO allegedly called India a 'poor country'.
  • Evan Spielgel has been under fire from the Indian netizens.
  • An official statement said Snapchat is thankful for the Indian community and the reports are 'ridiculous'.

According to a report in Variety, a former employee Anthony Pompliano from Facebook that has been made multiple attempts to copy Snapchat, has alleged that when talking about growth in 2015, Spielgel made the comment.

Pompliano said that when he tried offering ways to expand, Spielgel said he doesn't want to expand in 'poor countries' such as India and Spain and the is for 'rich'.

The claims that the parent company Snap has been claiming 100 million DAUs at the time, but the Flurry survey has counted only 97 million. He also alleges that the growth has been in single digit rather than claimed double digit.

Snapchat has released an official statement, "This is ridiculous. Obviously, Snapchat is for everyone! It's available worldwide to download for free. Those words were written by a disgruntled former employee. We are grateful for our Snapchat community in India and around the world."

While it is still unclear if Snapchat CEO made such a comment and, or what exactly he meant considering the poor connectivity and data issues India faced in 2015, the twitterati hasn't taken it lightly.

I don't know what's the big deal if the CEO of Snapchat called India a poor country. How many of you ever even bought an app or a movie?
