Reliance Jio may launch DTH services, set top box images leak

Synopsis

Looks like Reliance Jio is ready to disrupt the TV sector. Leaked images hint at DTH services from the company.

According to reports circulating online, Reliance Jio is working on DTH (Direct To Home) service. Previously, rounded set top box images had leaked and the latest leaked images show a usual rectangular Jio-branded set-top box. It comes with HDMI port, USB port, ethernet port, and other cable ports.

The company also plans to offer a seven-day catch up option, and the content will be saved on Jio servers and not locally, according to an Indian Express report. What is being dubbed as JioTV could serve over 360 channels. Out of these, 50 will be in HD.

Again, the biggest change is likely to be the prices. News has it that just like its data plans, the JioTV plans will also be lower than most others. The service is expected to come to Mumbai soon. It could be served for free as introductory offer.  Speculations are rife that Jio may partner with Netflix, Amazon Prime to provide content to users.

Meanwhile, Reliance has extended the Jio Prime membership deadline to 15 April. Here’s what you need to know.
