Microsoft might move out of mobile phone business

Ever 2014, when Microsoft took over Nokia to embed their operating systems in mobile phones, the division has seen declining profits. Now reports indicate the technology major may shut its mobile manufacturing and selling division wholesale. 

According to a Mobile Indian report, rumours regarding this have been doing the rounds after Microsoft announced 1850 job cuts in Finland, where Nokia is based. However, the software giant has assured support for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OMEs).

An email, which was sent to OMEs by the company, said, "I want to assure you that your investment in Windows phones is not at risk. The mobility of the Windows 10 experience remains core to our More Personal Computing ambition. We will continue to support and update Lumia devices that are currently in the market, and the development of Windows 10 phones by OEMs, such as HP, Acer, Alcatel, VAIO, and Trinity; as well as develop great new devices."

Nokia was forced to write-off their mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014 for $7.5 billion. But, the new owners have never seen the stocks make a profit.

Currently, the market is hugely dominated by Android and iOS mobile phones, to which users tend to remain loyal.

Android has a huge market share of 84.1 percent whereas iOS enjoys a 14.8 percent market share.  The Windows phones' business hardly covers 0.7 percent of the market.
