Bengaluru techie arrested for stealing Aadhaar data

In the past, Aadhaar has been hitting headlines for several wrong reasons and here's yet another. A Belgaluru techie reportedly working for Ola has been arrested for hacking and accessing details from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) server.  The police said the techie developed an app named Aadhaar e-KYC Verification that provides Aadhaar data verification and illegally accesses UIDAI servers.

31-year-old Abhinav Srivastav is an MSc graduate from IIT-Kharagpur and lives in Yeshwantpur, Bengaluru. Srivastav, who hails from Kanpur in UP, has been suspected of stealing details like phone number, address, email ID, age, sex of about 40,000 users. However, it is believed that he hasn't accessed any fingerprints.

The Times of India report , citing police, further reveals that he accessed the data via e-hospital app which is by government's National Informatics Centre (NIC). He developed an e-KYC app that was available on the Play Store and anyone who used this app would enter the e-hospital service that is a central government scheme. 

He was arrested on the basis of the complaint by an UIDAI official and will be reportedly questioned further. The complaint has been registered under Sections 37 and 38 of the Aadhaar Act. Also, the cyber crime branch has registered case under Sections 65 and 66 of the Information Technology Act and Sections 120B, 468 and 271 of the Indian Penal Code, adds the report.
