Porur witnesses heavy traffic snag due to heavy rains today. As a result of this, the public took the inauguration of the newly-made flyover in the area in their hands and started using the same before the official inauguration was done.
Poonamallee:
Porur junction is the main junction connecting Mount Road, Kundrathur Road and Arcot road. Lakhs of people commute through these areas every day to reach Poonamallee, Vadapalani, Kundrathur and Guindy. To cut down the traffic jam, people requested the government to build a flyover. In fact, many protests had also been carried out while demanding the same.
New Flyover:
As per the request of the public, the flyover construction begun on 2010, during the regime of DMK by the Highways Department. But when the regime was replaced by the AIADMK government, the flyover construction project was dropped. The construction resumed on July 2015, for which an amount of rupees 55 crore was allotted.
Traffic Jam
People waited patiently for the miscellaneous works to be completed but even after the completion, the flyover was not opened for usage. Due to the heavy downpour, the traffic jams worsened than normal days. It took people 30 minutes to cross the junction. Adding to the woes of the people were the bad condition of the roads, which worsened during the rain. That was when the people decided to open the flyover by themselves, despite police intervention.
It took half an hour to control the trespassing after which the policemen restricted the way through the flyover.
People then requested the government to open the flyover as quickly as possible.
