Tamil Nadu operates 22,500 government buses in various parts of the state. The audit report of year 2016 states that the government has faced a loss of 2,600 Cr.  One and half lakh people are employed in the transport department of Tamil Nadu.

Maximum number of government buses are being operated in Tamil Nadu. A count of 22,500 buses are being operated that connect all the routes, including small villages and hill areas. The audit report of year 2016 states that the government has faced a loss of 2,600 Cr. 

It is said that one and a half lakh people are employed in this department. This department functions round the clock to serve people. Hence the transport department is insisting to allocate fund once in a year.
