Lankan Navy strikes again! 12 more Indian fishermen arrested

Twelve fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested today by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing near the Lankan coast, the second such incident in three days. 

The fishermen were arrested while reportedly fishing off Neduntheevu, Fisheries Inspector Bala said. 

They have been taken to Kangesanthurai. 

Their three boats were also seized, the official added. On August 8, nearly 50 fishermen, belonging to Pudukottai and Jagadapattinam districts, were arrested for allegedly poaching in Lankan waters. On August 8, the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 48 fishermen after firing in the air. The fishermen, mostly belonging to Pudukottai and Jagadapattinam districts were taken to Kangesanthurai by the navy personnel.

The navy officials allegedly rammed their boats against the mechanised vessels and under its impact four fishermen fell into the sea and were then rescued immediately. The rest of the fishermen were asked to surrender, which they did.
