The incident happened at 8:30 pm on Saturday. Amarendra Ram was collecting scrap from the floor of an underground station when the rod fell. A police officer, speaking to the Times of India said, "An iron rod was not properly fixed and it fell when the victim was standing on the ground floor. It fell through the gaps and hit his head."

It is said that other workers rushed to the spot when they heard Ram's cries and rushed him to the hospital. From there, he was moved to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital but died there. The Periamet police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the case. A police officer said that there was a safety net at site, so it is possible that he was not wearing a helmet.

Meanwhile, an official from the Chennai Metro Rail said that all the engineers ensure that the workers wear their safety gear at all times. Moreover, regular inspection is being done to check whether all the workers have received their kits before starting work. The official said, "A few of them are careless at times. But we have asked all engineers to ensure that the workers wear safety gear. They personally check every day to ensure that the workers are wearing their safety jacket and head gear."
