Tamil Nadu: Daily wage worker's love for nature has turned his village green

Synopsis

Mari, a daily wager, has been planting trees since school days He has planted trees near the lakes, ponds and by the side of the roads Mari is one of the reasons for the rains in Maruvathur

A man’s love for nature has helped fill a village with trees.

Mari, a daily wage labourer, belongs to the village Maruvathur near Perambular. He has been planting trees since school days.

He has planted trees near the lakes, ponds and by the side of the roads. He spends most of his time in nurturing the trees.

He is particular about sowing soil friendly seeds and plants. Trees such as Neem, Peepal, Banyan and Beech have grown tall and stand majestically to give shade and coolness.

He not only plants trees but spreads awareness on the importance of growing tress among the youth.

He nurtures the saplings in the nursery and gives them away to people who ask for it with the interest of gardening. In the beginning the villagers ignored his efforts but now they have joined hands with him in planting trees.

There is a saying in Tamil “Thanimaram thopaagathu” (A tree makes no garden) but it is proved that one single man can create a forest.

It is not an exaggeration if we say that Mari is one of the reasons for the rains in Maruvathur.
