The 2021 US Open saw former champion Andy Murray getting knocked out in the opening round to Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, the Britisher was unhappy with the Greek’s extended bathroom break.

Former US Open champion Andy Murray of Great Britain suffered a hard fate on Tuesday after Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas knocked him out in the tournament’s opening round. It was a competitive five-set thriller, where the latter prevailed 2-6, 7-6(9-7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

During the match, the Greek took an extended bathroom break. Consequently, the Britisher was left unhappy with his deeds, while Germany’s Alexander Zverev also slammed the former. “Fact of the day. It takes Stefanos Tsitipas twice as long to go the bathroom as it takes Jeff Bazos to fly into space. Interesting.” wrote Murray in a tweet.

According to New York Times’ Ben Rothenberg, Murray told the chair umpire why they are allowed to do this. He even summoned tournament supervisor Gerry Armstrong and said that it had never taken him so long to travel to the toilet.

Following the match, he told reporters during the press conference, “It’s just disappointing because I feel it influenced the outcome of the match. I’m not saying I necessarily win that match, for sure, but it influenced what was happening after those breaks. I rate him a lot. I think he’s a brilliant player. I think he’s great for the game, but I have zero time for that stuff at all, and I lost respect for him.”

Even Zverev took Murray’s side during his press conference, following his opening win over America’s Sam Querrey (6-4, 7-5, 6-2). During the Cincinnati Masters a couple of weeks back, he had accused him of taking abnormally long bathroom breaks.

Following the same, Tsitsipas defended himself by stating that he had never done anything illegal in his career. He explained that it takes him around five-six minutes to get everything changed up. He asserted that if someone fails to understand it, he/she has not been in the shoes of a professional tennis athlete, besides also affirming that he played by the rules.
