The Tokyo Paralympics seems to be getting good for India, as it bagged three medals on Sunday. Earlier, paddler Bhavina Patel had won the silver in table tennis singles after losing to Ying Zhou of China in straight sets 7-11, 5-11, 6-11.
Meanwhile, Nishad Kumar, too, has won the silver in the high jump event. He jumped 2.06 metres and, in the process, scripted an Asian record. Roderick Townsend and Dallas Wise won the gold and bronze of the United States of America sequentially.
Following Nishad’s feat, Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “More joyful news comes from Tokyo! Absolutely delighted that Nishad Kumar wins the Silver medal in Men’s High Jump T47. He is a remarkable athlete with outstanding skills and tenacity. Congratulations to him. #Paralympics”.
In the meantime, discus thrower Vinod Kumar gave India the third medal, as he bagged bronze. His throws counted 17.46m, 18.32m, 17.80m, 19.12m, 19.91m, and 19.81m in the six attempts, while his fifth distance became an Asian record. The gold and silver were won by Piotr Kosewicz of Poland and Velimir Sandor of Croatia, respectively.
On Vinod’s success, Modi tweeted, “India is rejoicing thanks to Vinod Kumar’s stupendous performance! Congratulations to him for the Bronze Medal. His hard work and determination is yielding outstanding results. #Paralympics”.
