Tokyo Olympics: Wrestler Sonam Malik loses 62 kg pre-quarters fight to Bolortuya Khurelkhuu on debut

Synopsis

India's wrestling campaign in the Tokyo Olympics was off to a shaky start as debutant Sonam Malik lost her 62 kg pre-quarters fight to Bolortuya Khurelkhuu of Mongolia.

Tuesday marked the beginning of the wrestling campaign, as India happened to be in action. In the only Indian wrestling action of the day, debutant Sonam Malik was up against Bolortuya Khurelkhuu of Mongolia in the women's 62 kg pre-quarters fight.

However, it did not go according to plan, as the Indian suffered a defeat. While the score was tied 2-2, the Mongolian was declared the winner on the criteria of winning the final point.

The opening few moments of the fight saw both the wrestlers checking each other out, with no real intention of scoring a point. However, Sonam secured the opening push point at the end of the first three-minute period.

The Indian extended her lead to 2-0 with another push point in the following period. However, Khurelkhuu bounced back quickly by taking a leg down of Sonam, along with a takedown point.

According to Sonam's coach Ajmer Malik, while the Indian was a better wrestler than the Mongolian, she went over defensive. While he admitted that she would rectify her mistakes, it was indeed a big-stage experience for her.
