Tokyo Olympics: Watch Mutaz Essa Barshim, Gianmarco Tamberi display incredible spirit to share High Jump gold

Synopsis

In a fascinating display of the Olympic spirit, two friends Mutaz Essa Barshim of Bahrain and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy, decided to share the gold medal in the high jump at the Tokyo Olympics. Watch the video here.

The Olympic Games is all about individual and team supremacy. However, there is something called the Olympic spirit, displayed by the athletes and the sides on numerous occasions.

Similarly, a couple of high jumpers, Mutaz Essa Barshim of Bahrain and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy, who also happen to be good friends, displayed the same spirit. Having been tied for the high jump gold, the two were elated to have done so.

Meanwhile, the officials gave them a choice for a playoff to determine the gold medalist. However, Barshim asked if they could share the gold, to which the official promptly agreed.

Following this, both were equally excited, while it was Tamberi, whose joy knew no bounds, as he rolled on the floor in tears of joy, securing his first-ever Olympic medal. Meanwhile, Barshim rushed onto the stands to celebrate with his team, while it was his third Olympic medal, having won a bronze (2012) and silver (2016) previously.

The two share a detailed history. The Qatari had helped the Italian to recover from a career-threatening ankle injury since the 2016 Rio Olympics.
