The 2020 Tokyo Olympics saw Indians toil even in tennis. Sumit Nagal was hammered by world number two Daniil Medvedev in Round 2, as he lost in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) within just 66 minutes.
In what was expected one-sided domination, world number two Daniil Medvedev of Russia outplayed Sumit Nagal of India in Round 2 of the men's singles tennis in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 on Monday. It was a straight-set defeat for the Indian, with the Russian hammering him 6-2, 6-1.
Medvedev hardly gave any effort, as the 160th ranked Indian had no answers for the two-time Grand Slam finalist. Nagal struggles to play regularly at the ATP tour level, as the inexperience was visible in his gameplay.
Nagal lost his serve in the opening game, as his backhands went to the nets, while his forehand strokes landed outside the service line. Meanwhile, Medvedev used his powerful strokes, as the Indian failed to match up with his pace to trouble the Russian.

Although Nagal managed to hit a few winners, they were too low to trouble the world number two. In the second set, the match was over after he dropped his serve again by hitting a forehand shot wide.
. bows out of , going down 2-6, 1-6 to World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev. 🎾
👉This , he became the first Indian men's player since Leander Paes, to make it to Round 2 of the Games! 👏 |
Nagal had won his opening game of the competition against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, India's first men's singles win of the tournament in 25 years. He rose to prominence after winning a set against the Swiss great Roger Federer during the 2019 US Open.
Earlier, Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina lost in the women's doubles event on Sunday. As a result, it seemingly ends India's tennis campaign at the Games, with the contingent unlikely to have a mixed doubles team due to low rankings.
