There seems to be no shortage of surprises and upsets in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. On Tuesday, top female tennis contender and star Japan's Naomi Osaka was knocked out of her Round 3 singles match against Czech Republic's Marketa Vondrousova.
It was a straight-set defeat for the world number two (6-1, 6-4). Her loss comes just a couple of days after world number one Ashleigh Barty of Australia lost her Round 1 match.
Osaka, who lit the Olympic torch, looked surprisingly out of touch. While she lacked rhythm, she could barely launch her bid for a comeback, making 18 unforced errors.

In the opening set, Osaka had a chance to break early. However, Vondrousova saved a couple of break points while she raced to a 2-0 lead and breaking the Japanese again to extend the lead to 4-0. Although Osaka broke back, the Czech broke her for the third time to claim the opening set 6-1.
In the next set, world number two seemingly found back some rhythm, but Vondrousova maintained her momentum and composure as she took it until the closing stages of the set. The Czech saved a couple of break points, while she converted one of the two match points to leave Osaka reeling and shocked.
