Tokyo Olympics: PV Sindhu storms into semi-final after defeating Japan's Yamaguchi Akane

Synopsis

PV Sindhu defeated fourth seed Yamaguchi Akane of hosts Japan 21-13, 22-20 in straight games in the quarterfinal match. 

Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has entered the semi-finals of women's singles badminton at Tokyo 2020. 

She defeated fourth seed Yamaguchi Akane of hosts Japan 21-13, 22-20 in straight games in the quarterfinal match. 

Now she is just one match away from the medal.

The first game of the quarterfinal clash was a testament to what a great game it can be when the two top seeds are on the badminton court.

Sixth seed PV Sindhu defeated Akane with a mix of net shots, and powerful smashes to win 21-13 in 23 minutes.

In the second game, Sindhu initially took a 15-8 lead in the match. However, Akane showed why she was among the top players in the world. 

Making a comeback, Akane overtook Sindhu to make the score 20-18 in her favour at one time. But then Sindhu fought back and scored four consecutive points to turn the match in his favour.

Sindhu is just one match away from the medal. She will face the winner of the ongoing quarter-final between Thailand's Intanon RatChanok and Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu-Ying in Saturday's semi-finals.
