Spaniard Garbine Muguruza clinched her maiden French Open crown as she defeated World No.1 and defending champion Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4 in Paris on Saturday.

Serena, who was looking for a 22nd Grand Slam title that would have had her equal German Steffi Graf's Open Era record, was denied at the last hurdle.

Serena had also reached the final of the year's first major, Australian Open, in January, only to be denied in the last stage by Angelique Kerber.

The 22-year-old Muguruza, who will now rise to World No.2, became the first Spanish woman to win the Roland Garros since Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in 1998.

On Saturday, Serena appeared to have no answer to Muguruza's strong and consistent serving, although the American herself struggled to get her first delivery in with any accuracy, allowing the Spaniard to attack her second serve.
