A controversial goal reminiscent of Diego Maradona's infamous 1986 'hand of God' effort has bundled Brazil out of the Copa America after a shattering 1-0 defeat to unfancied Peru.

In a crucial Group 'B' match for either team, Raul Ruidiaz diverted an Andy Polo cross into the Brazilian goal using his right hand, in the 75th minute, leading to massive on-field protests by the suffering team.

The goal was upheld by the referee, even though subsequent video replays clearly showed it was indeed Ruidiaz's arm that was responsible for the deflection.

Brazil, who only needed a draw to make the quarter-finals, were stopped from reaching the last eight for the first time since 1993.

Peru will face Colombia in the quarter-finals on Friday.
