Liverpool star Diogo Jota dies in car accident: Football world shocked by tragedy 2 weeks after wedding

Spain: The world of football has been brought to a standstill after Liverpool star Diogo Jota died in a car accident at the age of 28, just two weeks after his wedding. Local media reported that the 28-year-old Portuguese forward died in a crash near Zamora, in northwestern Spain. Jota had joined Liverpool in September 2020 from Wolves for a fee of more than £40 million. His brother Andre Silva, also a professional footballer, also died with him in the tragedy. He is survived by a wife and three children.
 

 
Liverpool devastated

Liverpool Football Club said that the team was devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support,” they added.

Jota had played a crucial role in the five years he was at Anfield, helping Liverpool win the Premier League last season.

 

 

Condolences pour in

Portugal football team wrote a detailed post expressing their heartbreak. “The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are utterly devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva this morning in Spain. Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community,” the post read, adding that they have asked UEFA to observe a minute of silence before the country's match against Spain in the Women’s European Championship.

 

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wrote on X, “Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.” Fabrizio Romano, football journalist, expressed his grief in a social media post. “Deepest condolences, support, and thoughts are with those involved, his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
 

 

Arsenal FC's AFTV also expressed their condolences. “Everyone at AFTV is deeply saddened by the heartbreaking news about Diogo Jota. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and all at Liverpool Football Club during this incredibly difficult time.”
 


Leeds United also took to social media to express their condolences. “The thoughts of everyone at #LUFC are with Diogo Jota’s family, friends and all associated with @LFC at this devastating time (sic).”
