Synopsis

Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma's dismissal in the IPL 2026 match against KKR sparked a major controversy. A low catch by Varun Chakravarthy was upheld by TV umpire Nitin Menon, despite replays causing debate. The decision left fans and experts divided on social media, questioning the call.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener and vice-captain Abhishek Sharma found himself in the centre of a heated debate over his controversial dismissal during the IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata on Thursday, April 2.

After being put first by KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, SRH posted a solid total of 226/8 in 20 overs. Openers Abhishek Sharma (48) and Travis Head (46) gave the visitors a fiery start to their innings with an 82-run partnership while batting at a strike rate of over 200 before Heinrich Klaseen’s 52-run knock, and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s 39-run innings guided the middle-order.

For Kolkata Knight Riders, Blessing Muzarabani led the bowling attack with figures of 4/41 at an economy rate of 10.20 in his spell of four overs. Vaibhav Arora picked up two wickets while conceding 47 runs at an economy rate of 11.80 in four overs.

Abhishek Sharma’s Controversial Dismissal

Abhishek Sharma’s stay at the crease was posing a serious threat to KKR's bowling attack as the left-handed opener was timing the ball beautifully and rotating the strike effectively, but his innings not only came to an end prematurely but also sparked controversy after Varun Chakrvarthy took a low catch.

The controversial dismissal took place in the ninth over of the SRH’s batting when Abhishek attemped pull shot off Blessing Muzarabani’s lower short-of-length delivery. The ball was toward deep square leg, where Varun Chakravarthy made a sensational low catch just above the ground.

Though Chakravarthy took a catch, the on-field umpire decided to consult the TV umpire, Nitin Menon, who upheld the dismissal after reviewing the replay, confirming that Sharma was out. Abhishek Sharma walked back to the pavilion with his head shaking in disbelief.

Abhishek Sharma was returning to his rhythm after his dismal performance in the IPL 2026 opener against the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he was dismissed for just 7, and fell just two runs short of his fifty of the season in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Batting at a strike rate of 228.57 and smashing four sixes as many as fours, Abhishek's innings had the potential to take SRH to a commanding total before the controversial dismissal cut his knock short.

Abhishek Sharma’s Controversial Dismissal Sparks Debate

Abhishek Sharma’s controversial dismissal sparked a massive debate on social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), with fans and cricket enthusiasts divided over the umpiring decision, some calling it unlucky for the batter, while others lauded Varun Chakravarthy’s sensational catch.

Taking to their X handles, fans and cricket enthusiasts were split, with many claiming that the ball bounced before Varun Chakravarthy’s catch and criticizing TV umpire Nitin Menon’s decision, while others applauded the KKR bowler’s effort and the umpire’s review, calling it a tough but fair call.

The debate saw reactions ranging from frustration and disbelief to admiration to the skill involved, highlighting just how controversial the moment had become.
