India's Rio Olympics contingent hits a century

For the first time in its sporting history, India will send over 100 athletes to the Olympic Games.

India's contingent for the upcoming Rio games reached and breached the 100-member milestone as quarter-miler Mohammad Anas, sprinter Srabani Nanada, long jumper Ankit Sharma and archer Atanu Das clinched Rio berths on Sunday.

With the latest qualifications, India already has 23 participants in track and field, with the number likely to rise.

Three more could make the cut in boxing, while at least a couple of more swimmers are in contention to qualify at a meet next month.

India had sent an 83-strong contingent for the London Olympics four years ago.

This past April, the then sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal told the Parliament that India was targeting '10-plus' medals at the Rio Games.

However, a private sports database analyser has forecast a solitary gold (mixed doubles tennis) and three bronze (women's team archery; Shiva Thapa in boxing and Jitu Rai in pistol shooting) for India's 100-plus squad in Rio.
