As reported on June 20, 2017, Anil Kumble stepped down from the post of head coach for the Indian cricket team. ‘Jumbo’, as he is called, wrote a letter confirming the rift between Captain Virat Kohli and him and how he always respected the role boundaries between a coach and a captain.

He has thanked the Cricket Advisory Committee for asking him to continue as the head coach and has credited his achievements over the past one year to the captain, the team and his supporting staff.

Anil Kumble had said that he will not accompany team India in the upcoming tour of West Indies. Even in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy in England, he only gave some practice to Indian bowlers and did not interact much with the team.

The resignation comes after much speculation of growing dissatisfaction in the Indian camp against Kumble. Several players have accused of being a tough taskmaster. As made clear in the letter, Virat Kohli is said to have complained about his overbearing nature.

The BCCI had, before the start of the ICC Champions Trophy, invited fresh applications for the post of head coach.

Organisations must strive to preserve committed people. I will be disappointed if there isn't a bigger role for @anilkumble1074
