At 41, Anamika (name changed), from Thiruvananthapuram was a fully grown female. But inside the female body, a male writhed and wriggled to break out and assert himself.
She used to show male behaviour since childhood and wanted a sex change. Her parents fully supported her in the difficult decision making. But the long sex assignment treatment and surgery at private hospitals would cost many lakhs. The surgery alone would have cost Rs. 10 lakhs at a private facility!
Dr Ajayakumar of Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College came to her help. And the surgery was successfully performed at the cost of Rs. 3 lakhs.
Anamika underwent three years of hormone treatment ahead of the surgery, which created history of Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram by becoming the first government hospital in the state to perform sex reassignment surgery.
Dr Ajayakumar, Head of the plastic surgery department, said it was a very difficult process, starting with expert psychological counselling three years back to prepare Anamika for the sex change. The hormone treatment lasted a year. A series of surgeries were performed at three stages after that.
This is how Anamika turned a full male in three years:
- Psychological counselling.
- A year of hormone treatment that involved injecting male hormones in different stages.
- Three major surgeries at different stages, including the removal of breasts and uterus and vagina, was followed by the implant of the male sex organs.
- The complicated male organ implant took two days.
- The artificial implant of organs: Muscles the thighs were used to recreate organs.
Doctors say that the patient could urinate with new male organ. But, he will have to undergo a very costly surgical procedure to be able to engage in sexual intercourse with the new organ.
