To address the growing concerns around the deteriorating air quality, Kochi will roll out its first ever solar auto rickshaw service on August 15. The three-wheeler can run 80 km with six hours of charging and during a sunny day, this can be extended up to 120 km.
Conceived by Lifeway Solar Devices, a company based in Kochi, the vehicle can run at a top speed of 40 km per hour. The roof of the auto is fitted with solar panels, and the sides are left open similar to conventional autorickshaws. The vehicle can accommodate five. The batteries can also be re-charged electrically.
The vehicle is expected to considerably reduce air and sound pollution in the city. The State Motor Vehicle Department has granted conditional approval to the auto. The auto rickshaw is priced at Rs 1.25 lakh.
