The abduction and assault of prominent Mollywood actress point to infiltration of goons into Malayalam film industry. Agencies that provide guards to film stars states that the so-called 'bouncers' are thugs appointed by actors as their personal security.
"The trend started hardly two years back. Actors prefer guys in a sporty outfit with toned muscle as their personal guards. However, such persons are not interested in sticking around for long, and they have other intentions," a person providing security to the film crew for several years said.
Personal security gets a chance to form a close relationship with prominent personalities in film industry within a short period, and this is the root of all troubles. "I won't hire new guys. Having been in the industry for over 25 years and have at least 30 persons whom I supply exclusively to film industry. Still, we are not considered as part of the film crew in locations," Das, who manages Nayana cine security services said.
Usually, guards are recruited by persons who are close to film stars. "Most persons come to the movie industry with their own aims. New guys are usually trouble makers, and almost all of them have a criminal history," he said.
Malayalam Cine Technicians Association (Macta) Federation is also of the opinion that including people with criminal background in the industry led to the latest incident. "Pulsar Sunil had worked as a driver of several actors though he had a criminal background," Macta general secretary Baiju Kottarakkara said.
Pulsar Sunil is included in several cases in which he was accused of duping persons after getting employed as their driver. He even ran a service where he used to provide drivers on request.
"In every case, he had suggested his friend as the driver before duping the person. He had tricked a doctor in Tripunithura. He befriended the doctor through his service and became his driver for a short period. Later he tried to flee with the car of the doctor along with another person whom he introduced as his friend. Police later traced the car from Kozhikode," a police officer said.
