
A police officer died in a freak accident at Kochi in the wee hours of Sunday. The officer apparently got shot from his pistol during night patrolling.
The diseased officer, Sabu Mathew, was the Assistant Commandant of Armed Reserve Camp at Thripunithura near Kochi. The mishap occured at around 1.30 AM when he was returning home in his car after night patrolling.
According to police, the officer was in the back seat of the car when the accident occured. When the vehicle was about to enter a parking lot at Vazhakkala in Kochi, the police personnel sitting in the front heard a gunshot from behind. The officer told his companions that he got shot accidentally.
Even though Mathew was rushed to a private hospital nearby, his life could not be saved. The bullet had pierced through his abdomen and left deep wounds inside. The dead body will be shifted to Alappuzha Govt. Medical College for postmortem.
