The Kaikondonahalli Lake on Sarjapur Road in Bengaluru was renamed as ‘Swami Vivekananda Udhyana Vana’ on Thursday. Renaming an age-old water body of the city and that too under political compulsion has disappointed the citizens, lake activists and historians.
According to the historians, there are stories of sacrifices behind each and every single lake in Bengaluru. Therefore by changing the names and replacing the original ones with legendary figures are not only affecting the history behind the lake but also showing disrespect to the popular figures.
The Kaikondonahalli Lake was not kept clean by BBMP and the local residents took up the initiative to restore the water body. With determined efforts from the locals, the lake somehow turned into a much better looking water body. And that is exactly when the politicians intervened and decided to usurp the local’s action.
The lake was on the way to become a dump yard as people continued to throw waste and garbage in it. Then the local residents and the lake activists had stepped up to the occasion and changed things. But the politicians’ intervention did not make a number of people happy.
